Senior Quarterback Jeremy Hunt drops back to throw a pass

Friday, Aug. 26 was an excellent day to be an OPRF Football fan.

That evening, in front of a spirited beach-themed student section, the Huskies marched to a 21-14 victory over Simeon. It was opening night, and OPRF’s first home football game since last October.

That night also marked the return of senior quarterback Jeremy Hunt, who missed much of the 2015 season after suffering an ankle injury. He started 2016 in top form, however, as he threw for 140 yards and a touchdown. “It felt like I was back home again,” said the quarterback. He hadn’t suited up for a game in nearly 11 months.

Although Hunt has been starting quarterback since his junior year, he says he has adjusted his playing style and leadership role coming into his senior year.

“I take more risks,” says Hunt, regarding his new tactical approach to the game. He claims he has gained confidence running and passing the ball. On opening night, he ran for a total of 55 yards and scored a touchdown running the ball himself.

I’m stepping up more… I’m taking more opportunities to step in and say something.

His new approach, he says, may not have been the same without a season-ending ankle injury. “While I was injured [last year], I was up in the press box for every game,” says Hunt, “…watching from up there, it was easier to understand what the coaches wanted me to do on the field… it really helped me become a better player.”

As a senior, Jeremy Hunt has become a role model and team leader. “This year,” he says, “I’m stepping up more… I’m taking more opportunities to step in and say something.”

Coach John Hoerster, who teaches a leadership class, taught Jeremy Hunt during his junior year. This year, Hunt is a SILC in the same class. “I’ve had the opportunity to see him mature as a leader on the football field and in school,” says Hoerster.

Led by Jeremy Hunt, the Huskies have started 2016 with a perfect 4-0 record and are ranked 11th in Illinois by the Chicago Tribune. They have outscored their opponents in each game by an average margin of four touchdowns.

Looking ahead at a stellar season in the making, Oak Park is certainly glad to see it’s top quarterback on the field again.
