Music review club: making connections through

Delaunay Krauter, A&E Editor

For many people, music is a way to connect with others; a universal language that speaks to emotional truths and evokes a sense of community.

OPRF’s music review club is a place for those people to come together and discuss what music means to them.

Co-president of music review club Jennie Bull is someone who’s passion for music plays a dominnt role in her life. “Music kind of means everything to me,” Bull said,  “It has filled so many cracks of emotion in my life and has brought me closer with so many people. Without music the connections that I have with others would be missing something. Because music is so personal I feel that sharing the music that means the most to you is so vulnerable.”

Her other half, senior co-president Jasper Nord feels similarly, and for him, music review club affords him a place to talk with people who share an interest. “I get a chance to talk about and share the music I love with other people who want to hear about it. It’s really nice to be able to connect with people over something that’s so universal but so individual at the same time,” Nord said.

Meetings take place every Monday after school in the graphic design room and look a little something like this, “We sit down and talk about our songs of the week and answer whatever question we’ve decided on for that week. Then we usually split into groups based on who wants to talk about whichever topics we have for that week, and talk about them,” Nord said. “We talk about new releases and our opinions on all kinds of albums. We also plan events and are working on designing a T-shirt and writing in-depth reviews of albums.”

This year, as co-president, Bull plans on incorporating some new things. “I really want to get the website up and running again. also we’ve been playing around with a lot of ideas for ways to fundraise money which I think would be really fun, as we’ve never had funding in the past,” Bull said.

For Bull, the club represents a place of friendship and connection. “My favorite part of the club is the sense of community that we’ve built. it really just feels like i’m hanging out with my friends even if I’d never spoken to them before the club,” Bull said.

Mark Bach, a junior who started attending the club at the start of this year, also enjoys  discussing musical interests, regardless of whos they are. “Personally I don’t listen to much of the same music as most of the club as I tend to listen to more older music or classic rap but I still enjoy talking about other music and it introduces me to music that I never heard but still do enjoy,” Bach said.
