Athlete in focus: Justin Mullins
On Nov. 24, the OPRF boys varsity basketball team seized a win against the Thornwood Thunderbirds, scoring 72 points. Senior Justin Mullins accounted for over half with a hefty 38 points and also tallied nine rebounds.
In their most recent game on Dec. 3, OPRF gained another win against Fenwick, accumulating 66 points. Mullins had 20 and 12 rebounds.
Many of the varsity boys basketball players have been playing together since they were young. Mullins thinks this season will be a big one for the Huskies. “The connection we have is very special and very important,” he said.
“His athleticism and talent definitely stand out on the court,” said senior John Vincent, a longtime friend and player alongside Mullins. Vincent is committed to play basketball at Grinnell College next year.
Off the court, Vincent said Mullins “is also really easy going and funny, which stands out.”
However, when game time comes, Mullins said he is always anxious. “I look at the crowd and feel my stomach drop a little, but as soon as we start playing, I forget about it all.”
Mullins has committed to the University of Denver, a Division I program. He received a full-ride scholarship.
In terms of college, Mullins is anxious, but still looking forward to it. “I’m extremely happy with my decision to commit to the University of Denver. I think the coach there has a great vision, and they will definitely be in the NCAA tournament in the next couple years,” he said.
Phil Gary, the boys varsity basketball head coach, admires Mullins’ athleticism, as well as his offensive and defensive abilities. Looking ahead, the coach hopes he leads the team every game and brings them to greater heights.
“If he can understand the (Division I) level, as it’s a big jump for anybody, and if he’s able to adapt more quickly, then the sky’s the limit,” said Gary.
