The Oak Park and River Forest High School varsity cheer team has had an extraordinary season, marked by their hard work, dedication and a series of impressive performances.
This year, the team has not only excelled in their routines but also strengthened their bond as a cohesive unit, making their journey even more memorable.
The season kicked off with rigorous training sessions that included the cheerleaders honing their skills and perfecting their stunts, jumps and sideline cheers. Their commitment to excellence was evident from the start, “The hard work we put in throughout the season pays off in so many ways, the excitement of accomplishing them is surreal,” said senior Madison Harris.
The team’s coach played a pivotal role in guiding and motivating the cheerleaders, ensuring that each member was on track to reach their full potential. This is credited to the great connection between the coaches and the cheerleaders, “There is a lot of love and respect, between the athletes and coaches. We work hard to create and maintain an environment where they know to expect tough coaching but on the other end of that, they know it’s because we care for them and want what’s best,” said Coach Brianna Burton.
Throughout the season the OPRF cheer team participated in several competitions across their conference, consistently earning top placements. Throughout the season the team has hit multiple zeros on routines, as a result of perfect performances, and had multiple top fives including varsity being fourth in conference for the first time in five years. They placed third at Marian Catholic with a score of 91.70.
Beyond competitions, the cheer team also played a vital role in boosting school spirit at various sports events. Their energetic performances at football and basketball games excited the crowd and encouraged the school’s athletes. “Looking up at the stands and seeing the energy from the student section is amazing. Watching them do cheers with us is one of my favorite parts,” said senior Maya Berry. The cheerleaders’ enthusiasm and positive energy were amazing, making them an integral part of each event.
This season the team had a total of five seniors who parted ways with the team after their senior night that was held on Feb.14. The team said their farewells to seniors Christina Cleveland, Audrey Loeper, Maya Berry, Madison Harris and Maya Marobella. As the seniors showcased their growth and the skills they’ve developed together, cheers echoed through the gym, a reminder that their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of OPRF cheerleaders.
