If the Huskie varsity football team wins tonight, it has a long shot chance of making the playoffs.
Last Friday night, the Oak Park and River Forest High School Huskies lost to Lyons Township High School, putting our record at 2-5. Normally, this would knock the team out of playoff contention, as you need six wins for automatic entry to the playoffs, according to the Illinois High School Sports Association (IHSA).
If a team has five wins, it can be eligible for playoff entry, with priority given to the team awarded the most playoff points. Playoff points are given based on how hard the teams you play are. Then, if there are still spots remaining, four winning teams become eligible, and four winning teams get in every year.
Fortunately, OPRF is in the second-hardest conference in the state. That means that if there is no 4-5 record team ahead of us, a 4-5 team from our conference would be in the playoffs. For OPRF to earn that spot, they need to win the next two games on the following Fridays. The Huskies have a home game against Addison Trail on Friday, Oct. 17, followed by an away game at Hinsdale Central on Oct. 24.
