Athlete in Focus: Peter Zurawski

In 2021 and 2022, the boys volleyball team had strong seasons, ending with appearances at the state tournament. Senior Peter Zurawski, who is committed to play at Ball State, is now the leader of the strong 2023 class.

“This year our biggest strength will be our experience,” said Head Coach Justin Cousin. “The guys who were sophomores when we went to state in 2021 are now seniors, and we are going to use that experience to our advantage.”

Zurawsky has been a starter on the team since he was a sophomore, where he flashed his potential early. “I recognized Peter as an elite volleyball player in seventh grade,” said Cousin.

“His skill and confidence stood out early on in his career,” he added.

Cousin continued to praise Zurawski’s confidence and love for the game as reasons why he is so successful. “He is confident in his abilities and welcomes any challenge,” said Cousin. “His love for the game allows him to overcome many obstacles and helps him play with purpose. He is consistent in every part of the game and always does his part for the team.”

Zurawski also credited his success to his confidence and his training in all aspects of the game. “Being an all around player and having training in everything makes it so I know what to do in any situation,” said Zurawski.

“His dedication and love for the game is what truly sets him apart,” said junior Quinn Bozarth. “Playing with him is so fun because his skill and his extensive knowledge of the game, as well as being the same position as him is very beneficial to me because of his tips to improve my game.”

“Also, being mentally skilled and being able to go into every point with a fresh, confident mind no matter what happened the point before is something I make sure I do,” he continued.

This spring, Zurawski was considered to be a part of the U-19 Men’s National Team, an honor that Zurawski didn’t take lightly. “It’s really been my dream and something I’ve been working towards for years,” he said.

“However, I’m not done yet,” he said. “I want to earn the Illinois Most Valuable Player, as well as make it to the podium after coming so close two years in a row.”

One of the most important things that a player can have is the ability to lead, and Cousin praised Zurawski’s ability to guide his teammates and get the best out of them. “Peter is a great leader. He makes sure to hold his teammates accountable and allows them to be themselves,” he said. “He has high expectations for everyone around him and pushes everyone to be their best self.”

Bozarth also voiced how important Zurawski and his leadership are to the team. “Peter’s leadership on the court is what brings the team together in my opinion,” he said. “He’s the guy that makes the team play as a single machine, rather than six different guys on the court. His skills combined with his leadership allow us to compete at a much higher level.”

Cousin also talked about how Zurawski makes his teammates better. “Peter’s gameplay is significant to his teammates. His high-level play allows his teammates to focus on their weak points and play with more comfort,” he said.

With the season already underway, Zurawski is aware of how valuable his last season as a Huskie is to the team as well as the school. However, even after high school, Zurawski has a very bright future ahead of him. “I’m looking forward to playing with my club this summer, and also playing for one of the best college volleyball programs in the country,” he said.

With two years at state under his belt, Zurawski, as well as the rest of the volleyball program, is hoping the third time’s the charm for their state hopes.
