The Oak Park and River Forest High School Boys Tennis Team finished a strong second out of eight teams in the Mount Prospect Invitational held April 18.
The Huskies were highly focused, running effective plays and staying aggressive at the net. Head Coach John Moldridge remarked, “We had consistent performances all the way across the board.”
In fact, it was the first time this season that all players won their first-round matches. New Trier High School just edged out the Huskies to take home the tournament championship.
Sophomores Alek Rekucki and Naveen Rajagopal had impressive showings. Both players went undefeated in their singles matches and won their individual events.
The Huskies’ second-place finish adds to the team’s promising start to the season. Rekucki reflected on the weekend, saying that it was a “solid finish¨”and a “big confidence boost going forward.”
Moldridge has high expectations for this year’s team. “I always want to be top 10 in the state, and I think that’s an attainable goal,” he said. The team not only wants to earn a spot at sectionals, they are determined to play well at sectionals and beyond.
With about a month left in the season, the final stretch of competition will be crucial for building momentum and achieving the team’s goal of a deep postseason run.
