Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? O-P-R-F! This summer, the Oak Park and River Forest High School theater department is venturing to the fictional underwater town of Bikini Bottom with their production of “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.”
Michelle Bayer, chair of the theater department, described the play as having “a ton of individual and unique characters and lots of opportunities for kids in performance, tech and instrumental.”
The OPRF summer theater program is offered as a summer school class. Throughout the years, it has produced various productions such as “The Addams Family,” “Matilda” and “Grease,” which ran last summer. “We start on June 9, and the show performs July 11 through July 13,” Bayer said. “We rehearse only four days a week for a few hours each day.”
The show is a great way to stay connected during the summer, Bayer said. “A lot of times, kids find that in the summer you get detached from your friend group. I find that kids like the musical because it keeps them attached to a friend group. So, when you’re done at 3:10 p.m, you can go out to dinner or plan things for the evening.”
In this musical, Bayer also stressed the importance of ensemble and collaboration. The students who partake in the musical will leave having a new sense of experience and accomplishment in the end, she said.
The OPRF team behind “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” is looking for about 90 students to participate in the musical, but Bayer also said, “We take everyone in for the summer musical, the cast and crew.”
To register for the summer theater program, see the information on flyers posted around the school. Additionally, students can access summer school registration on OPRF’s website and can email Bayer directly. The production is open to OPRF students, incoming freshmen, graduated seniors or students from other area high schools.
Bayer encouraged students to join the musical “to grow as a performer or a technician.”
