Women in sports do not receive the money and fame that they deserve. Meanwhile, many low-level male athletes are rewarded with much higher salaries than women while playing the same sport.
For example, NBA player Jameson Curry, who only played 3.9 seconds in his whole NBA career, was paid around $500,000. But Catilin Clark, who revolutionized the WNBA playing for the Indiana Fever after a record-breaking run playing for the University of Iowa, only gets paid $ 78,000 a year. That is almost seven times less than Curry.
Female professional athletes experience this same disadvantage of getting paid less, in a variety of different sports. Because of this unfair system, we propose this easy solution. Since women athletes have been treated unfairly for years, men should now be treated the same way.
Under this proposal, male athletes would be paid much less than they are now. Instead of making millions of dollars, they would earn salaries closer to what women athletes make.
If they complain about this change, they would be reminded that they should be grateful for the opportunity to play their sport at all. After all, many people would love to be in their position, and money should not matter if they truly love the game.
Male athletes would have to learn to live a completely different lifestyle. No more millionaire perks. They wouldn’t be able to drive their $300,000 cars and own multiple homes. They get to learn what it is like for many female athletes. Lebron James, for example, with a net worth of around $1 billion, would now have to give up most of his assets and drive a used Honda Civic to games.
Men’s sport would also receive far less attention from the media. Their games would no longer be shown during prime time or heavily promoted. Instead, they would be scheduled at inconvenient times and streamed on websites that are difficult to find. The Super Bowl would be aired at 11:45 a.m. on a Tuesday.
Sports reporters would stop talking about men’s skill and achievements and instead focus on their emotions, attitudes or appearance.
In addition, male teams would receive fewer resources. They would practice in older gyms, share equipment and travel with smaller budgets. Instead of getting private chartered flights, NBA players would have to fly commercial, or take a team bus. They wouldn’t receive the same recovery technology that they currently use, so injuries would rise.
Meanwhile, the women’s team would finally receive better facilities, better coaching, and better treatment overall. This role reversal would clearly show how women have been expected to succeed with much less support for years.
This solution would have many benefits. First, male athletes would finally experience the inequality that women athletes face every day. Second, fans and media would suddenly start caring about fairness once men are affected. Third, sports leagues would be forced to explain why women were ever paid less in the first place. Most importantly, the idea that women deserve less money and respect in sports would be exposed as completely unreasonable.
Some people may argue that a better solution would be to simply pay women athletes equally and give them the same respect as men. While this idea sounds fair and logical, it does not fully show how unfair the current system is. By letting men experience inequality themselves, the problems become impossible to ignore.
So which team wants to volunteer to start? LA Lakers? Chicago Bears? New York Yankees?
Guys…hello? Any takers?
